Soft Wing Technology

After a century of rotary and fixed wings, it is the time for the century of flexible wings that will bring humanity to the flexibitlity that is needed in fields of such diversity as protection of the environment, the economy, the transportability and the sensations of liberty. For that reason it will revolutionize the world of aviation.


A century ago, Aviation gave birth to a multitude of aeronautical prototypes projects based on fixed wings systems. The progressive consolidation of products and the manufactures created the fondations for today's aeronautics.

A couples of years later, the same phenomenon happened with the rotary wings systems which also progressively gave secure and final a good sixty years later. This consolidation reduced in number the major manufacturers.

However, very specific rechearch on the NASA space shuttle braking systems and for parachuting, soft wings technology were not so attractive to the scientists and the engineers during the 20th century.

It was not until the beginning of the 21st century that aerial sports gave to passionate people - scientists and sportsmen also- a new domain of reseach for soft wings technology. This new domain of technology gave birth to numerous applications such as paragliding, motorized gliding, kite-surfing. It also started a developpment for soft wings technology. This research allowed to prove the stable and secure capabilibilities, the high tolerance to human errors due to the pilot, the extrem transportability and the financial economy.

Soft Wings technology has now begun to prove that its application allows to discover unsuspected performances due to the innovative vectors like:

  • Capability to change their geometric shape (adaptability to the different steps of flight)
  • Conceptions of improvment and Computer Aided Design (CAD for 3D designs)
  • New textiles and better manufacturing processes (better resistance to UV rays / low temperatures, tear-proof / easy repairs, resilience)

Soft Wings technology associates innovative vectors with other domains:

  • Lightness and miniaturisation of the systems (navigation, pilot assistance, communication)
  • Easy integration of:
    - missions systems
    - hybrid motorizations.
  • Easy usage of the bio fuel,

give promessing prospectives of the future.


What is the Future for Soft Wing Aircraft?


The combination of the innovative vectors offers a multitude of opportunities of progress which are not easy to resume.

To mention only the short term effects:

  • Take-off in windy or blustery conditions,
  • Speed variation of a ratio of 3,
  • The possibility to use the system in the range of temperatures of -40 to +55°C and an altitude between 0 to 20,000 feet,
  • The life span is about 1,000 hours,
  • Payload similar to the empty weight system,
  • Hybid motorization with bio fuel.
